How to A/B Test Your Pop-Up & Create Killer Welcome Flows that Convert Like Crazy

Priority: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 | Difficulty: 💪💪💪

Listen, if you're not capturing emails from your visitors, you're leaving money on the table.

Email is the most profitable channel for any e-commerce business, period. And when you nail your pop-up strategy and welcome flows, you're giving yourself the best chance to turn casual visitors into loyal, repeat buyers.

In this blog, I’m going to break down how to use A/B testing on your pop-ups to get more people on your email list, and then how to follow up with a welcome flow that builds trust, provides insane value, and pushes them to hit that “Buy Now” button.

1. A/B Test Your Pop-Up for Maximum Conversions

Pop-ups are the easiest and quickest way to get people onto your email list, and the more people you get on the list, the more money you make.

But they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. You need to test constantly to find out what works best for your audience.

Here’s the deal: every brand is different. So what might work for a competitor could fall flat for you. That’s why A/B testing is your best friend. Here’s how to do it:

  • Test Timing: When should the pop-up show up? Right away? After a few seconds? Or only when the visitor is about to leave the page? Find the sweet spot.
  • Test Copy: What gets people to bite? “Learn how to solve X problem” or “Insane offer”? Test both and see which resonates better.
  • Test Design: Does a minimalistic design work better, or something more eye-catching and bold?
  • Test Triggers: Does the pop-up show up based on specific behaviors, like scrolling or exit intent? Find what gets the best results.

2. The Welcome Flow: Give Value, Then Hit Them With an Offer They Can’t Refuse

Now that you’ve got them on your email list, it’s time to nurture that relationship. Your welcome flow is the key to taking a casual visitor from "Who are you?" to "Take my money!"

Listen closely: You can’t just drop a “Thanks for signing up” email and call it a day. You need a strategic, value-packed welcome flow to keep them engaged and push them toward making their first purchase.

Here’s the flow I recommend to get them to pull out their wallet:

Email #1 – The Warm Welcome

Subject: “You’ve made the right decision!”
This email is all about building a relationship. You don’t sell anything in this email, just thank them for subscribing, introduce your brand, and set expectations about the value you’ll provide.

  • Show off your best-selling products and tell them why you’re different from everyone else.
  • Test including your offer against excluding as a just to say “thanks” for joining the family.

Email #2, #3, #4 and #5  – The Value Bombs

Subjecst: “Struggling with [Problem]? Here’s loads of valuable information to help”
Now it’s time to deliver insane value, again and again. These emails should be pure helpfulness and take people from skeptics to believers.

  • Don’t pitch, just provide helpful content. Share how-to guides, tips, or recommendations to show that your brand isn’t just about selling, it’s about solving their problems.
  • This is where you prove that you’re the go-to expert in your niche.

Email #6 – The Social Proof Email

Subject: “Our customers can’t stop raving about us”
This email is simple: show off how awesome you are with social proof. Show them testimonials, customer reviews, and user-generated content.

  • People trust other people more than they trust you. Social proof is the easiest way to build trust quickly.
  • Make it clear that others love what you do and that they’re in good company.

Email #7 – The Urgency Push

Subject: “You won’t want to miss this”
Now, it’s time to hit them with a special, time-limited offer that gets them excited to buy.

  • This is where urgency comes into play, don’t give them forever to make a decision.
  • Create a sense of scarcity or offer a flash deal. Something like “Only 24 hours left to get your [insane offer].”
  • Make sure the offer is too good to ignore.

Email #8 – The Last Call

Subject: “Last chance for [insane offer]!”
This is the final nudge. You’ve built the trust, given the value, and now you just need to get them to act.

  • Remind them of all the reasons why your products will make their life better.
  • Reinforce the urgency, this is their last chance to get the offer before it expires.
  • Keep it simple. Don’t overload them with info. Just a strong call to action and a clear path to purchase.

3. Engagement: Don’t Let Them Forget About You

Here’s the thing: Once you have their email, you’ve got to stay in their face. But don’t just spam them with sales emails. You want to engage, not annoy.

  • Personalize your emails: Use their name. If they’ve looked at specific products, mention them. Make the email feel like it’s coming from a real person, not a robot.
  • Make your subject lines pop: If your subject line doesn’t grab attention, it doesn’t matter how good your email is. Your subject line should spark curiosity or offer value.
  • Segment your list: Not everyone is the same. Segment your list by behavior (opened emails, visited pages, products viewed) so you can send more relevant offers and content.

4. Automation: Let It Run on Autopilot

Once your pop-up is live and your welcome flow is in place, automation is the key. You don’t want to be manually sending these emails, let the tech do the work for you. We love Klaviyo for it's ease of use and features.

  • Set up your pop-ups to trigger automatically when users meet specific criteria (time on page, exit intent, etc.).
  • Automate your welcome emails so that the minute someone subscribes, they get the first email of your series.
  • Monitor your A/B test results and adjust the flow accordingly. Klaviyo makes it easy to track everything and see what’s working and what’s not.

5. The Bottom Line: Start Now, Optimize Later

The bottom line? A/B testing your pop-up and crafting a killer welcome flow is the easiest, most effective way to turn visitors into repeat customers.
